This story reveals a remarkable young man who, spared the brutalities of fascism, returned to defeat fascism in the land where he was born, as well as Nazi control of France and Germany. This is a sweeping narrative that takes the reader from Mario’s early childhood in a home where water was drawn from an outside well, to a new life in America, then back to Italy to fill an important role in the liberation of his homeland.

Few others alive today can offer a first-hand account of World War II in Italy, France and Germany. Through the author’s eyes we gain insight into childhood under fascism, a young man’s part in a world at war, and a family’s eventual settlement in California’s agricultural and high-tech centers.

CeaseFire_authorsmallMario Ricci was born in 1924 in a small city 60 miles southeast of Rome barely a year before the dictator Benito Mussolini seized control of the Italian government and imposed fascist rule. His formal schooling began in classrooms dominated by photos of the dictator and instruction controlled by political demands. Little could he or anyone in his family have imagined that all of them would escape by sailing to America in September 1936 when he was nearing his 12th birthday. Even more remarkable, no one could have foreseen that Mario would return to Italy in 1944 as a soldier and combat radio operator in the U.S. Army at age 18.
